How To Participate:
Be Respectful: We won't always agree. That's part of the fun!
Be Honest: It's okay to dislike the book
Be Heard: Speak your mind and tell us what you think!
Be Positive: Keep negativity to a minimum. Nobody's a less of a person because of what they enjoy. (For example: No Harry Potter slamming!)
Some ideas that might help you to discuss the book:
While You Read
*Flag passages that jump out at you - good or bad. It might be just one funny phrase or a half-page of dialogue. Flag all you like.
After You Finish
* Go back through your flags and choose your favorite passage to read aloud at book club.
* Choose a few ideas from the following list of things to include in your bookchat.
* Make a few notes: You don't need to write down everything you want to say, just a few notes to glance at while you're talking.
What To Include In Your Bookchat
Pick one (or a few)
* What did you like about this book?
* No book is perfect. What didn't you like?
* What kind of book is it? Mystery, science fiction, war story, etc? Does it fit neatly, or is it a mash-up?
* Is this book like any other you've read? Does it make you think of other stories?
* In 25 words or less, what happens?* What's the Big Idea? Many authors write because they have a message to get out. Others write for pure entertainment. Did you get a message from this book?
* Who else would like this book? Who should NOT read it?* Finish this sentence: If you liked this book, you'd also like....*
* Rate the book from 1 to 10 and tell why.
Lousy Books
It happens. The book you read was lousy. What now?
* Tell the group why you didn't like it and read a passage that shows how awful it is.
Author Info
If you enjoyed the book you might want to look at the author - What is/was their life like?
What motivates them to write?
What else have they written?
Do any insights about the story surface after looking at the writer behind the plot?
